Cavalli’s Veremonda (1652) is an opera set in medieval Iberia during a battle between the armies of the astronomer king of Aragon and the Muslim queen Zelemina for the fort she occupies atop the Rock of Gibraltar. But there are no male characters playing Muslim soldiers. There are only a few female and male characters playing Aragonese soldiers. The battle scenes take place offstage.
