Ethan Heard

Based in Brooklyn, ETHAN HEARD directs plays, musicals, and opera, ranging from new work to Shakespeare, Sondheim to Handel. He is proud to have directed three YBOP productions: Ardo, Ardo: Monteverdi in Motion, L’Orfeo, and Erismena. As Founding Co-Artistic Director of Heartbeat Opera, “a categorically imaginative company, which has made its name with vital reshapings of repertory operas” (The New Yorker), he has directed Fidelio, Butterfly, Dido & Aeneas, Kafka-Fragments, The Seven Deadly Sins, and four drag extravaganzas including a special performance on the High Line. Other opera includes Poppea (Princeton), and the world premieres of Desire|Divinity (Judson), Empty the House (Curtis), and Sisyphus (Experiments in Opera). Musical theater: Little Shop of Horrors, Bells Are Ringing starring Kate Baldwin, and A Little Night Music starring Phillipa Soo (Berkshire Theatre Group), The Other Room (Inner Voices), Merrily We Roll Along and Sunday in the Park with George (Yale), Next to Normal and Into the Woods (Princeton). He also served as Resident Director of Jay Chou’s The Secret in Beijing and Shanghai. Plays: Middletown (The New School), Partners (AADA), The Cat and the Canary (BTG), and Julius Caesar (Yale).
